Crux Monographic History

Terms of Service

Version 1.0
Last Updated: 3 August 2026

In short

CRUX is a subscription history app. One article is free to read without an account; beyond that you sign in, and beyond the daily free article you subscribe.

A subscription is £4.99 a month and can be cancelled at any time through your device settings.

The writing, the recordings and the design are ours. Read them, quote them with credit, but do not republish them.

If we ever withdraw the app, you get 60 days' notice, the billing stops, and your data is deleted.

This summary is for convenience. The numbered terms below are the agreement.

1. About these terms

1.1 These terms form an agreement between you and Robert O'Sullivan, trading as CRUX Monographic History ("CRUX", "we", "us").

1.2 By using the CRUX app you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the app.

1.3 The CRUX Privacy Notice forms part of these terms.

2. Eligibility and accounts

2.1 You may read one article without an account. Beyond that, an account is required.

2.2 You must be 13 or over to hold a CRUX account.

2.3 Accounts are created by signing in with Google or Apple. There is no separate CRUX password.

2.4 Your account is personal to you. You may not share it or permit another person to use it.

2.5 We may suspend or close an account used in breach of these terms, including systematic copying of content or interference with the service. We will state the reason.

3. Beta period

3.1 CRUX is currently in beta testing. During the beta, access is free and no payment is taken.

3.2 Beta access is free for the duration of the beta only. It is not a permanent free account and does not carry over.

3.3 When the beta ends, the subscription terms at clause 4 apply to all users, including beta participants. We will give notice in the app before that happens, and no user will be charged without prior warning.

3.4 The beta is a pre-release version. Features and content may change without notice. Reports of faults are welcomed at feedback@cruxhistory.com.

4. Subscriptions

Price and access

4.1 A CRUX subscription costs £4.99 per month.

4.2 A subscription provides unlimited access to the full CRUX library in all three reading formats: Article, Book and Podcast.

4.3 Without a subscription, you may read one article per day, in any format.

Payment and renewal

4.4 Subscriptions renew automatically each month until cancelled.

4.5 Payment is taken within 24 hours of the end of the current billing period.

4.6 All payments are processed by Apple or Google, according to the app store through which you subscribed. CRUX does not receive, hold or process card details or billing information.

Cancellation

4.7 Subscriptions are cancelled through your device, not through CRUX:

4.8 Cancellation must be made at least 24 hours before the next renewal date. Cancellation after that point takes effect from the following billing period.

4.9 On cancellation, access continues until the end of the period already paid for.

4.10 Deleting your CRUX account does not cancel your subscription. Account deletion and subscription cancellation are separate actions and both must be completed.

Refunds

4.11 Refunds are administered by Apple and Google under their own policies. CRUX does not process payments and cannot issue refunds.

Price changes

4.12 We will give at least 30 days' notice of any change to the subscription price. You may cancel before the change takes effect.

5. Content and intellectual property

5.1 All content in CRUX — including monographs, podcast recordings and scripts, images, and the design of the app — is original work owned by CRUX and protected by copyright.

5.2 A subscription grants access to that content for the duration of the subscription. It does not transfer ownership or any licence beyond the permissions set out below.

5.3 You may quote briefly from CRUX content, with attribution to CRUX, in the ordinary course of citation, review or discussion.

5.4 You may not reproduce, republish, redistribute, sell, translate, or publicly display CRUX content, in whole or in substantial part.

5.5 You may not use CRUX content to train, fine-tune or evaluate any machine learning system, and you may not extract content by automated means.

5.6 Licensing enquiries for educational or research use may be sent to feedback@cruxhistory.com.

6. The service

6.1 We maintain CRUX with care and aim to keep it available at all times. We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free access.

6.2 We may modify, add to or withdraw features, and may revise or withdraw individual monographs, including where new evidence requires it.

6.3 We may carry out maintenance that temporarily affects availability. Where this is planned, we will give notice in the app.

6.4 CRUX publishes researched historical writing. It is not professional advice, and should not be relied upon for legal, financial, medical or academic decisions without reference to the underlying sources, which are cited throughout.

7. Liability

7.1 Where we fail to provide the service in accordance with these terms, our total liability to you is limited to the amount you have paid to CRUX in the twelve months preceding the claim.

7.2 We are not liable for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable, or for business losses, including loss of profit, revenue or opportunity.

7.3 Nothing in these terms limits or excludes any liability that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded.

7.4 Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.

8. Ending your use of CRUX

8.1 You may delete your account at any time in the app, under Profile. Deletion is permanent.

8.2 If you hold a subscription, you must also cancel it under clause 4.7.

8.3 We may close an account in the circumstances set out at clause 2.5.

9. Withdrawal of the service

9.1 If CRUX is permanently withdrawn, we will:

(a) give at least 60 days' notice in the app;

(b) discontinue the subscription through Apple and Google, so that no further payment is taken. Existing subscribers retain access until the end of the period already paid for;

(c) delete all user data in accordance with the Privacy Notice.

9.2 User data will not be sold or transferred to any third party.

10. Privacy

10.1 Our handling of personal data is set out in the CRUX Privacy Notice.

10.2 In summary, CRUX holds an account identifier, an email address, and a record of articles read. This data is not sold, shared or used for advertising.

11. Changes to these terms

11.1 We may amend these terms from time to time.

11.2 Where an amendment materially affects price, access or your rights, we will give notice in the app before it takes effect, and you may cancel.

11.3 Other amendments take effect on publication, with the revision date updated above.

12. General

12.1 These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.

12.2 If you are a consumer resident elsewhere in the United Kingdom, you may bring proceedings in your own jurisdiction.

12.3 If any provision of these terms is held to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue in force.

12.4 These terms constitute the entire agreement between you and CRUX in relation to the app.
